Every unnecessary apology teaches people to take you less seriously.
Stop apologising for taking up space. Harsh and true.
I don’t mean the real heart felt apologies. Keep those. Own your mistakes. Repair when you need to.
I’m talking about the other ones.
“Sorry, can I just…”
“Sorry, this might be silly…”
“Sorry, I won’t take long…”
“Sorry, I know you’re busy…”
Before you have even said what you came to say, you have made yourself smaller.
And yes, this shows up everywhere. Work. Home. Family. Friendships. Leadership. The room changes, but the habit follows.
You soften your opinion. Delay the ask. Over-explain the reason. Check everyone else’s mood before you trust your own.
And the cost is real.
You miss opportunities. You avoid real conversations. You teach people that your time, voice, needs, and ideas are optional. You allow others to think less of you than they should. Not because they are awful, but because you keep presenting yourself as unsure, apologetic, or easy to dismiss.
That is one of the quiet ways you give your power away.
Being thoughtful is good. Constantly shrinking so nobody reacts badly is not.
So ask yourself: Where are you apologising, softening, or shrinking when you haven’t done anything wrong?
