These last few days I have been coaching one on one with a client working through the necessary characteristics and behaviours they want to develop so that they can create and maintain a spectacular relationship. This has led to lots of conversation about Reciprocity which is something crucial to have in your relationships. Why is this?
Well … A large factor in determining whether a relationship is healthy or successful is having a strong element of reciprocity – exchanging things with your lover for mutual benefit…… kinda like scratch my back and I will scratch yours……doing things for your partner that have the flow on benefit of being for you as well. Of course, this reciprocity and attitude builds up your intimacy and connection.
I got to thinking about reciprocity and how it has an impact on all areas of our lives – in our work relationships, business and friendships as well as in our intimate relationships. This led me directly to the 6 Principles of Persuasion, a model that I use regularly with my coaching clients who are business owners and entrepreneurs including the awesome solopreneurs who are the engine room for every single area of their business.
Robert B Cialdini wrote a great book called Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion which is all about these 6 Principles and how to apply them. Quick Heads Up! The 6 Principles of Persuasion are:
- Reciprocity
- Scarcity
- Authority
- Consistency
- Liking
- Consensus
This book is a great read however, to ensure that you don’t get bogged down in the reading, I want to get you started on this right now! So…To get an understanding of these principles, I recommend that you watch this great video:
>>>Science of Persuasion<<<
Science of Persuasion is an animated video which provides very relevant examples, provided by Cialdini, for each Principle. It is a great overview of the 6 Principles of Persuasion, in less than 12 minutes, and has been watched by almost 13 million people – so it comes very highly recommended!! Easy to watch and learn from which makes it ideal from my perspective.
These are very simple principles which will make a massive difference for you. There is lots to enjoy figuring out a variety of ways you can apply these 6 Principles of Persuasion to all areas of your work, your business, your life, and your relationships. My coaching to you, right now, is to take the time to learn how you can grab hold of your ability to influence others and get people saying YES to you.
