Do you realise that, in every single interaction you have with others, you can empower those around you just as easily as you can disempower them? This is especially important as a leader and/or a parent because you have the ability to be really deliberate about choosing an approach which fosters empowerment – even when it feels easier for you to do things yourself or to keep everyone safe by not allowing them to attempt things.
Check out these points:
> You disempower and demotivate your team (or your kids) by always being available and sorting everything out for them
>You lower your own standards when you want to be liked at the time
>You need to challenge and coach your team to problem solve for themselves
>You must stand back and let your team (or your kids) learn by doing and learn by failing
Being a leader and a parent is never easy all of the time or every single day. How does that song go?……….Clowns to the left of me, Jockers to the right, here I am stuck in the middle with you.
A great gift you can give yourself, your team and/or your kids is this: Work on developing your approach so that you look for and provide opportunities for learning and growth rather than becoming a Helicopter leader or parent.
Oh…..and YES!!! YES, YES, Yes. Helicoptering can and does happen in our intimate relationships as well so apply the same empowering approach to your partner.
