Last week I discussed self-awareness and my belief that developing and maintaining your self-awareness is a real SuperPower for growing, adapting and thriving in both your personal and business life.
But how do you actually build your self-awareness?
Great question! Well, let’s break building your self-awareness down into the four easy to remember areas from last week and identify some simple, effective and easy to apply tips you can start doing today to enhance each one.
👉 Intrapersonal Self-Awareness
Think of this as getting to know the “you” inside your head. First up is the realisation that this is an ongoing journey for us all. Activities that will build momentum include journaling about your daily experiences, practicing mindfulness or meditation to tune into your thoughts, and seeking feedback from others to spotlight your strengths and areas for growth.
Begin to notice patterns in your own behaviour – especially triggers – and reflect on how they align with your core values. The more you come to know yourself and accept your strengths and weaknesses, and who you are – the more confident and authentic you’ll feel in every situation.
👉 Interpersonal Self-Awareness
How willing are you to see yourself through someone else’s eyes? Asking trusted friends and colleagues for feedback takes courage and vulnerability however the learnings for you are likely to be really valuable.
Regularly ask yourself questions like, “What can I change to build a more positive environment?” or “How does my behaviour influence this group’s dynamics?” Reflect on your answers to determine what changes you might consider making to you leadership and communication. Being open to constructive insights and feedback from others will help you to better understand others and strengthen relationships, both at home and in the office.
👉 Behavioural Self-Awareness
Start noticing what you are noticing beginning with taking note of how you act and interact in different settings – are you quiet in large groups but outspoken in smaller meetings? Do you behave differently around certain people? Notice when you slip into passive or overly assertive behaviours.
Feedback from others is where you will get your data from so ask a colleague or mentor for honest feedback and really listen to what they share with you. By reflecting on the “why” behind your behaviours, you can make informed tweaks that boost your effectiveness and collaboration with others.
👉 Emotional Self-Awareness
Emotions can be tricky; however, journaling, reflection, and mindful practices help you recognize and label what you’re feeling. Look at including these in your daily habits. Talking with someone you trust can offer perspective and help you better process intense or confusing emotions.
There are common themes here which will boost your self-awareness: Reflection; Seeking Feedback; Noticing What You Are Noticing; Mindfulness and Journalling.
Pick one and begin today.
