Are Your Habits Making You Invisible Instead Of Contributing To Your Success?

Something that pops up regularly with my coaching clients, especially those who work in large organisations, including executives, is that they feel undervalued by their colleagues who seem to be largely unaware of the great work that they do.

I find that this also applies to business owners who often tell me that they are having to spend huge amounts of time finding new clients to replace their diminishing existing client base. Obviously, they are wondering just why this is happening.

So, what is going on here?

Well………. There are two habits that we can all fall into really easily that contribute to making us invisible to co-workers, managers and potential clients. And these two babies work together really well which makes them just a tad tougher to break.

  • First habit is being reluctant to bring attention to or to claim our successes.
  • Second habit is to expect that others [including our clients] are going to notice the great things that we do and acknowledge or reward us for these.

Let’s examine both these habits.

Often it feels more comfortable to keep our heads down instead of looking for ways to get recognised and acknowledged. Most of us know someone or a business, that seems to be real bigheaded about sharing their successes and if you don’t like what seems to be shameless self-promotion, you make a decision to not behave that way.

That’s fine however what happens for many of us that that we flip our thinking to the extreme and proceed to behave in the exact opposite manner………..which means we do nothing [although some of us tell ourselves how awesome we are for not blowing our own trumpet all the time]………….. and of course this contributes to our colleagues or clients being unaware of our successes because we didn’t tell them.

Effective marketing of yourself and/or your business is an important part of you reaching your highest potential. When you are ambivalent about this you send mixed messages including that you don’t put much value on yourself and your achievements.

Remind yourself that getting promoted and building a successful business requires Bold Action. Playing small will not help you to achieve this. Big and Bold does the trick.

The second habit of expecting that everyone else should and is going to notice your work compounds your invisibility. You keep yourself stuck with this belief.

Imagine if you had the assumption that your clients “should” want to buy from you? It’s competitive out there in the marketplace – or in any workplace – so you need to have a marketing function going on.

Yes….for you the individual

Yes….for you in the role you have

Yes….for your business and the range of products and services you offer

No-one can read your mind. You must be proactive to reduce your invisibility and increase your success.

Let me know if you would like more ideas about how you can do that.

So………….now for a bit of shameless promotion. During tough times, we can all be inclined to be a bit tough on ourselves.
