You know how something drops in front of you just at the right time? And you didn’t even know that you needed to hear it until you think about it later?
Well, this week has been a little crazy time wise and last night when I listened to a module from my international coaching education program, I got just the reminder I needed. It gave me such a timely kick in the butt that I want to share it with you.
There is always lots of chatter about how we need to be managing time or time manages us yeah?
So, for all of us a great big insight is the realisation that you simply cannot manage time because it marches on regardless of what you are doing – you can never get back the time you spent reading the news this morning for example.
The real secret sauce of multiplying your time is this: Your focus will be much more impactful when you place it on self-management rather than time management.
Three key takeaways from my session were:
- Prioritising does not create more time or help you finish any tasks – it simply moves the tasks around on their position on your list
- How we choose to spend our time isn’t just logical – it is also impacted by our emotions
- To Multiply your time, add a third component to your planning – Urgent (How soon do I need this) versus Important (How much does it matter) is joined by Significance (How long is it going to matter).
The live presentation I attended was delivered by Rory Vaden who is well known as a brand strategist. One of his mantras is that the results you achieve determine the reputation you carry, and it is this that led him into the study of time management.
